On Saturday, November 12th, 2016, an advance screening of “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them” and special Q/A between screenwriter, J.K. Rowling and lead star, Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander) took place with proceeds supporting J.K. Rowling’s charity, Lumos. Our Co-Founder, Michaella covered the event. Below is her account & spoil-free review. Enjoy!

Merlin’s beard! What a magical night! Let me begin by first thanking Lumos, Jo, and the amazingly fantastic cast of “Fantastic Beasts” for an incredible, unforgettable night! Not only was the movie more fantastic than words can say but I had myself a truly magical adventure.

With Dan Fogler (Jacob)

Carnegie Hall – 6:00 PM

As we took our seats, I spotted a familiar face but let me back up a bit. Earlier in the day, I received a tweet from a young girl dressed as Tina, saying she was attending the advance screening and hoped to see me there. There must have been magic in the air because that same sweet young girl was sitting right in front of me – out of all the seats in Carnegie Hall! It was a magical start to an enchanting night!

Shivers ran down my spine as Eddie Redmayne and Jo were introduced on stage. After a thunderous applause, they sat down and began to discuss Lumos. Although I have been a huge supporter of Lumos from the start (see Spread The Light), hearing Jo speak live about the issue with institutions; the neglection, corruption, and abuse within them was profoundly moving (see the video below & visit Lumos for more information on this crucial issue).

The discussion then turned to Fantastic Beasts and a bit of Harry. Although it’s not new news, it’s still worth mentioning, Jo confirmed again that there will be five Fantastic Beasts movies that span 19 years. She talked about how the characters in Fantastic Beasts have become her favorite (especially Credence and Jacob – easy to see why). The most interesting comment to me was how Jo described Warner Brother’s London Studio Tour as walking through her mind. Makes me want to book a trip to the studio right now!

Jo and Eddie then surprised us all by introducing the rest of the cast and the film’s director on stage! We welcomed them with a standing O and they invited us to sit back and enjoy the movie. The cast exited the stage, the room darkened, as the enchanting theme played and the WB logo appeared on the screen! The excitement in the air was electrifying!

Fantastic Beasts – The Film [SPOIL-FREE REVIEW]

Where do I even begin with the movie?! Fantastic Beasts is the perfect mix of Jo’s witty humor (that HP book humor that didn’t make it into the movies), dark and powerful undertones (that are so meaningful), adorable magical creatures (my favorite the Niffler), and of course, Rowling’s signature twists and turns.

Be ready to fall in love with these incredible characters! (Possibly even more than the golden trio, if you can believe that!) My two favorite characters (can’t possibly pick one) are Jacob, played by Dan Fogler and Queenie, played by Alison Sudol. They are so sweet, charming, funny, and loving!

Let’s talk acting! I had high expectations on the acting front and was not in the least bit disappointed. Eddie’s method style acting shines through in such a powerful way. He is Newt and is one with the CGI creatures. All the trips Eddie made to the London Zoo most certainly paid off. There’s one particular scene where Newt preforms a mating dance and call to lure a creature into his suitcase. The scene is moving and comedic all at the same time. It’s the equivalent of a documentary on National Geographic, if they had one for magical creatures that is haha!

Fantastic Beasts – More Than Meets The Eye

Fantastic Beasts is much more than just an enchanting story about magic and beasts. Heavy undertones of politics can be found throughout the movie from a strong, female, African American president of the MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America – Could Michelle Obama be Jo’s inspiration here?) to the introduction of a character who embodies why the work at Lumos is so crucial, Credence played by Ezra Miller. Like the rest of Jo’s works, there is so much more than meets the eye, hidden meanings and messages scattered throughout the film. It makes the film that much more powerful and is done in such a way that only Jo could pull off (not too in your face or discreet, done just right).

After The Movie – The Real Excitement Begins

I overheard something about an after party being held upstairs and Michael Gambon’s Dumbledore chanted in my head, “Curiosity is not a sin…”. My mother and I made it upstairs to find Dan Fogler (Jacob) and Katherine Waterston (Tina) in the flesh!!! I couldn’t help myself from walking up to Dan and asking for a picture. He happily agreed. Dan is just as sweet as the character he plays! My mother fell so in love with Jacob, she asked to kiss Dan on cheek lol. He replied, “You want to kiss me? Sure!” and she kissed him as I turned away laughing. Katherine was busy talking to another guest but I couldn’t resist taking a pic of myself near her. Our night ended there but I left completely ecstatic with the widest grin, one that my mom hadn’t seen on me since the last time I was at Carnegie Hall in 2007 meeting Jo backstage!

I’m going to leave you on a teasing note, there are much more dangerous things than beasts!

See “Fantastic Beasts” in theaters November 18th!

DressLikeJKR

For the ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ premiere on July 30th, J.K. Rowling wore a stunning navy, fitted dress by Roland Mouret paired with Sophia Webster winged heels. It was a fun, sassy combo in which Jo’s personality shined through as well as the plot line of Cursed Child (Jo’s accessories were little hints to the play’s script; i.e. the serpent ring for Slytherin)!

BUT the dress alone is $2,295! No need to worry! We’ve found Jo’s look for a grand total of $150.00! You can purchase a look-a-like dress from Amazon for only $120 & the find of a century, winged heels that could easily pass for a pair of Sophia Webster’s also from Amazon!

J.K. Rowling appeared for Robert Galbraith tonight for his nomination for The Silkworm at the 2015 The Crime Writers’ Association Dagger Awards. Although, Robert didn’t leave with an award this time, we remain optimistic that Career of Evil (out on October 20th in the US & 22nd in the UK) will be taking home awards to come! The Gold Dagger 2015 award was given to Michael Robotham for his novel, Life or Death. Photos from the event are surfacing. We will update the gallery shortly!

UPDATE:

Photos of Jo poising with fans have been added to the gallery. Special thanks to David Headley, Harry Illingworth, & Emily Coles!

J.K. Rowling went to the 200th Anniversary of the British Gurkhas at the Hyatt Regency in Kathmandu, Nepal where she was their honorary guest last night. Fans were lined up to catch a glimpse of Jo in a stunning red gown. Major Manoj Mohora of British Gurkha Nepal told news reporters, “We extended an invite and she accepted. It is great to have her here and we hope to see other dignitaries mark the 200 years of Gurkhas fighting in the British Army,”. Photos of Jo rocking in red are below!
